Case Study: Better U Therapies website

Introduction

Better U Therapies is a small business run by Sarah that offers various specialist sports massage and scar tissue massage services.  She is passionate about helping everyone enjoy good health whatever health issues they have faced.

She asked me to create a website for her new business. Although this was a relatively small project, and the stages of development were simplified, I still carefully went through the main stages to enable Sarah to be involved at every stage.

In larger projects it is important to note that there would be many more stages depending on the size of the website and additional items to look at such as search engine optimisation, tracking, advertising, ecommerce, accessibility, cookies, coding, and user testing.

The project

Sarah already had her logo and some icons from previous printed graphics work, and wanted to use those assets as part of her business identity on her new website. Working closely with Sarah throughout the whole process, I first created a basic overall timeline so we could work out what was a realistic time-scale for launching the site. After some brainstorming and inital meetings I was able to begin working through the design and development process with Sarah.

I’ve included below just a few key stages in the development of Sarah’s website.

Stage 1: Initial consultations

Timeline, aims and goals, information gathering

The information gathering phase included the creation of a basic timeline, finding out all about Sarah’s buisness, her customers and potential customers and what she wanted to get from the website. We also looked at what functionality she would like to be on the website at launch.

After planning came the initial design concepts / ideas alongside looking at funtionality

After several rounds the wireframes above were produced to help visualise the basic structure of the website, and where elements might be positioned, both on desktop and mobile. These images shows the main landing page (which is also the homepage in this case).

Stage 2: Gathering of design assets and copy

At this point we started to look at design elements as part of the content gathering process. This included sourcing images. Sarah was using a photographer for some shots, but we also needed to find further images to be used in various places on the website. I sourced some initial ideas and options, before we met again to discuss in detail how the images might look. For Sarah’s business, the feel of the images was very important.

We also began to investigate the colour palette that might be used across the website. After initial discussion, I provided some colour options as a starting point for Sarah to guage the feel of the colours for her website. We then worked together to fine-tune the colours until Sarah was happy with the look and feel.

Stage 3: Development and deployment

I spent some time researching a number of platforms including WordPress and Squarespace. In consultation with Sarah we decided the best solution for her requirements was Squarespace. This would mean that with very little training she would be able to make updates to her blog and text changes to the website as and when needed without needing to contact me.

As is often the case when using content management systems ‘off the shelf’ there is nearly always extra work to be done in order to do what you would like. I created some extra HTML and CSS coding in order to make sure that the functionality and look of the website was as close as possible to Sarah’s requirements.

Sarah also requested some intial social media assets to use for promotion when the website was launched. I created various assets for Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin.

A selection of the social media assets:

The end result was a fully responsive website incorporating a portal to her bespoke booking system, along with a contact form, general information, booking formation, FAQs and other digital assets. We had several longer meetings at various stages through the web design and development process, and I kept her informed in between those meeting of the project’s progress.

Trevor at Creative Bytes has produced a fantastic website for my new business! Trevor took great care to understand the brief, produce suggested samples and work with me to tweak the build until I was happy with the final product. I’m very pleased with the final look and feel of the site plus the incorporation of an integrated booking facility is a huge bonus which my clients really like. I would highly recommend Trevor for his attention to detail, practical solutions and overall project management.
